What do The Mary Tyler Moore Show, The Bob Newhart Show, and Maude all have in common?

Aside from making us laugh until our sides hurt, they share the genius of comedy writer Susan Silver—a woman who helped shape television history with her sharp wit, groundbreaking scripts, and an uncanny ability to speak to the female experience before it was a buzzword.

I had the absolute joy of sitting down with Susan for an episode of The Grands Club Podcast and let me tell you—it was nothing short of electric.

We laughed. We reflected. I can now vividly imagine a sitcom starring savvy grandmothers fighting ageism with one-liners and lemon bars.

Highlights from Our Conversation:

  • On being one of the first women in a writers’ room:

“I wasn’t trying to be brave—I was trying to be funny. That’s how I survived.”

  • On writing strong female leads before it was cool:

“We gave women smart dialogue, complicated feelings, and a sense of humor about it all.”

  • On the joy of being an “adopted” grandparent:

“It’s the best role I’ve ever had—no lines to memorize, just love and laughter.  She’s the love of my life and the cutest, smartest, funniest, most precious child that ever lived.”

Susan's powerful legacy:

Susan is more than a comedy legend—she’s a living example of how creativity, resilience, and reinvention can define every season of life. Her humor has aged like fine wine, and she reminds us that grandparenting, like comedy, is all about timing, patience, and showing up with a full heart.

If you’re a fan of great storytelling, television history, or just need a reminder that life (and legacy) gets richer with age—this episode is for you.
